Interview With Amy Dacyczyn

Filed under: Saving Money — Savvy Housekeeper at 9:10 am on Wednesday, November 25, 2009

Here’s a short interview with Amy Dacyczyn, the “Frugal Zealot,” who I have mentioned before on here. I had never seen her interviewed before and I was surprised by how pleasant she seems. I guess I had imagined her as a stern sort of person when in fact, she seems the opposite. She seems palpably content.

I also like her house, although it’s not my decorating style.

It’s interesting that we give thanks for everything we have in our lives one day and then the next go shopping. I have nothing against this, really, but I’m glad this video popped up to keep in my mind as I forge through traffic this Friday.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks for sharing the interview you had with Amy Dacyczyn. I’ve read her book several times and am always trying to put more of it into practice! Thanks again!

WOW!!!! I only discovered Amy D. after she retired when I bought the Complete TG at a used book store. I have been frugal all my life, a sore trial for my family who think I am excessive. It was so nice to find her and her movement and discover I was not alone in the world. I’ve always spent only 50 to 60 cents of every dollar I earned while paying taxes and SAVING the rest. My husband and I retired (age 55 and 49) early. Our house, RV, cars are all paid for. We pay off the credit card each month. We live on a budget. Even if our investments or economy go up and down we have plenty of money to do what we want. We are warm and well fed and happy being frugal. Amy D. was a great help just to know I wasn’t alone. It was wonderful to see her “live” in the interview.
Dear Amy, please start a blog. We would love to tune in and see how you and your family are doing. We feel like you and yours are part of our family and we care how you and your family are doing!!!! Much love, from one of your fan family.

What a great interview! I had never seen Amy, but read the Tightwad Gazette in 2003. I was $18K in debt and had the book on my shelf 5 YEARS before reading it, because I didn’t like the word ‘tightwad’. The principles work. I paid off my debt in 13 months on a $40K a year salary, while living in West Los Angeles (very expensive), and helping an expensive special-needs family. Then I saved and slaved in a cubicle farm for awhile. In 2008, I was (blessedly!) laid off, and have since moved to a cheaper state and bought a house. Me! Who always had to rent! A homeowner! A few months ago, my youngest daughter and her family finally lost the struggle to survive in California, were evicted, and were homeless. I loaned them the money to move here, she subsequently got a long-awaited legal settlement, and I was able to loan them the money to add to her settlement and buy a house. So now our family has two paid-for houses, are living in a much cheaper area, living simply, with a lake and a forest 5 miles away. I still do my daily tracking and keep spreadsheets of my expenditures. That reminds me — I’m behind with my spreadsheets — time to get cracking! Thanks for this interview, and Amy — if you read this — I did what you said. It was BECAUSE I was frugal in better times that I have been able to do so much with so little in leaner times. And I’m not going to die at my desk in that cubicle (my biggest fear.) THANK YOU.

Thanks so much for posting this. I found this through a link on another site and was thrilled to find your site as well. I read The Tightwad Gazette years ago and it changed the way I thought about spending money. The thing I love about Amy D is she is so creative and inspiring. I often find myself asking myself “what would Amy do? when I’m trying to be frugal and save money! :)

I grew up in a frugal family and the lessons have served me well. Amy has provided additional ideas to keep expenses down.
