8 Recipes For Homemade Pancake Syrup

A pancake syrup can be homemade! By definition, a syrup is a condiment that is a thick, viscous liquid consisting primarily of a solution of sugar in water, containing a large number of dissolved sugars but showing little tendency to deposit crystals. Its consistency is similar to that of molasses.

The syrup is a condiment that we can not skip adding to our breakfast meal, especially when pancakes are on the menu. It is our favourite topping on pancakes, crepes, french toast, waffles. And what is not to like?

Nowadays, there is a large variety of syrups on the market. The pancake syrup you’ve been buying at the grocery store is not a big deal. Pancake syrup is made with corn syrup and artificial maple extract. If you look at the back of a pancake syrup bottle, you’ll likely find corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup listed as the first two ingredients. Other ingredients include caramel colour and natural and artificial flavours.

Therefore, if you are buying syrup from your grocery store, go for pure maple syrup. The biggest difference between pure maple syrup and pancake syrup is the list of ingredients. Pure maple syrup is simply maple tree sap that’s been boiled down to a thicker consistency. That’s it. Just one ingredient.

Syrups can be made by dissolving sugar in water or by reducing naturally sweet juices such as cane juice, sorghum juice, maple sap or agave nectar. Corn syrup is made from corn starch using an enzymatic process that converts it to sugars.

Have you ever made a homemade syrup and served your family making them delicious pancake haven?

We highly recommend you to try these easy, quick and of course, delicious syrups that will take no time.

  1. I made my own maple syrup the whole time my kids were growning up! Just kept refilling a store bought bottle! My recipe was different than this one. Less ingredients.

  5. Jon and Mike, maple extract is found in the spice/baking aisle of your supermarket. It is not the same as syrup.

  6. IMHO, Bourbon would be a superior preservative over vodka. Or if one wanted to flavor the syrup, a flavored whiskey or liquor (like chambord) might be nice.
